Discover the Perfect Kid's Bed for Sweet Dreams and Fun Times

Choosing the right bed for your child is an important decision. Not only for a comfortable night's sleep but also for their safety and to enhance their room experience. From space-saving high sleepers to fun and functional gaming beds, there's a huge range of options available to suit every child's needs.

This guide will help you understand the various types of children's bed frame available. It also discusses the important safety features of some of these beds and how to choose a mattress for your child’s bed.

Types of Kid's Beds

Here are Archers Sleepcentre we have an extensive range of kids’ beds available. Below we've compiled a list of our most common kids bed types with some information on their features and benefits.

1.    Bunk Beds: Ideal for siblings sharing a room or for sleepovers, bunk beds are excellent space savers. Many come with clever features like built-in drawers or even desks underneath.
2.    Mid Sleepers: Mid Sleeper beds are a great option for smaller rooms. The mattress is raised off the floor, leaving space for a play area or storage underneath.
3.    High Sleepers: High sleeper beds are similar to mid sleepers but the mattress is raised higher off the floor. This leaves plenty of space underneath for desks, sofas or storage, and they are an excellent choice for older children and teenagers.
4.    Cabin Beds: Again, cabin beds are similar to mid sleepers but they have built in under bed storage. Some styles have added drawers or cupboards and others come with built in desks.
5.    Toddler Beds: Toddler beds are designed for small children moving from a cot to their first bed. Toddler beds are smaller in size and sit low to the ground, making it easy for your child to get in and out.
6.    Gaming Beds: These innovative beds cater to the tech-savvy child. They feature cut outs for wires and space for monitor and gaming accessories. enhancing the gaming experience right from the comfort of their bed.
7.    Guest Bed with Trundle. They have an extra bed underneath that can be pulled out. This allows you to have either two twin beds or one double bed. You can choose the option that best suits your needs.

If you need furniture for an older child or teenager's room, you can consider getting a small double bed. Another option are ottoman beds offering hidden storage. An ottoman bed might suit your child's room if you are looking for extra storage without sacrificing floor space.

Safety recommendations

Safety should always be a priority in your child’s bedroom. This is especially important when they are using a high bed frame.

Bed specific features:
•    Guard Rails: These are essential for top bunks, mid sleepers, and high sleepers to prevent falls and rolling out during the night.
•    Sturdy Construction: All bunk and cabin beds sold by Archers Sleepcentre comply with UK safety regulations (BS EN 747). They are made of sturdy materials and have been tested to ensure they are robust enough to handle regular use.
•    Safe Ladders or Steps: Make sure that the bed you are buying has ladders or steps suitable for your child. We recommend children under six should not use top bunks or high beds with ladders.

Room safety:
•    Access and space: When laying out the bedroom make sure there will be enough space around the bed for the ladder to be safely used.
•    Lighting: Getting up and down from a high bed when tired can be tricky, especially in the dark. Adding a night light can make this easier and safer. Some bunk bed ladders also come with glow in the dark stickers on them.
•    Routine Checks: Make sure you check your child's bed regularly for broken or damaged parts. Tighten any loose screws or parts and make sure the base is still supporting the mattress properly.

Choosing a Mattresses

Selecting the right mattress is crucial for both comfort and safety in your child's bed. All high sleepers, bunk beds and any other raised bed will have a maximum mattress depth for the top bed. Using a deeper mattress will make the safety rails less effective and could lead to injury. We usually recommend a mattress of no higher than 17cm for bunks and high sleepers.

Similarly trundle beds and guest beds also often have a maximum mattress depth. If the mattress is too high then the trundle will not fit and if forced it can damage the mattress or bed.
